Jenny Curran
Bubbly, beautiful, and determined to pursue a career in broadcasting, Jenny Curran is already a familiar face to many in Northern Ireland.
A model with the Alison Campbell Modelling Agency for six years, Jenny has been photographed for advertising campaigns with Littlewoods, DV8, Gordon’s Chemists, and Junction One. The 24-year-old from Portadown has also modelled extensively throughout the British Isles, and on shoots in Italy and China. Jenny has completed a Broadcast Journalism course at Belfast Metropolitan College, her studies incorporating radio and television production and a placement with Dermot O’Leary’s BBC Radio 2 programme. Since graduating she has also gained considerable experience with BBC BLAST (a network for showcasing young talent), co-hosting a weekend radio entertainment show. Something of a fitness fanatic and interested in sport since childhood, Jenny has represented Northern Ireland at the triple jump and pentathlon. Currently a columnist with the Sunday World she has developed an all-action reputation. With her modelling background and natural gift of the gab, Jenny has also proved quite a hit as a fashion show compere.
Colin Turkington
Bright, articulate, and devastatingly quick behind the wheel of a racing car, Colin Turkington is one of the UK’s leading motorsport drivers. British Touring Car Champion in 2009, the 29-year-old from Portadown is currently competing in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship with Swedish company Flash Engineering and selected rounds of the World Touring Car Championship for German outfit Weichers-Sport. Like so many of the world’s top drivers, his career started in karts (at the tender age of 11) before moving on to the Northern Ireland Metro Championship where he won his first title.Colin’s rise through the ranks culminated with a memorable British Touring Car title in 2009 driving a BMW for West Surrey Racing. Funding issues affected his 2010 season, yet nevertheless he still managed to complete ten races in the World Touring Car Championship, securing an impressive four podiums including one race win (in Japan).
Wendy Houvenaghel
Wendy Houvenaghel is one of Northern Ireland’s most successful ever sportswomen. A three-time cycling world champion and Olympic Silver medallist, Wendy has her sights firmly set on gold at London 2012. Originally from Upperlands and a former pupil of Rainey Endowed Grammar School in Magherafelt, Wendy only took up competitive cycling in 2002 and within a year she was National Circuit Time Trial Champion.
Despite her late introduction to the sport Wendy has gone on to amass a staggering array of titles, both on the road and track. Her success on the Velodrome continued at a rapid pace with 2008 Wendy’s most memorable to date. Taking her first world title in the Team Pursuit (Manchester) she made her Olympic debut in Beijing, securing a silver medal in the Individual Pursuit. Two further world titles have been added to the Houvenaghel trophy cabinet and the 36-year-old qualified dentist is now a genuine gold medal prospect for next year’s London games.
Alastair Mennie
Alastair Mennie is a world-renowned big wave surfer who happens to hail from, not Hawaii, California, or Durban, but Northern Ireland. Al has been involved in the search for and discovery of, many of the incredible big wave sites that exist along the coast of Ireland. He rode the record-breaking 60-foot plus swell at Mullaghamore Head, County Sligo, in 2007, an adrenaline-fuelled session that elevated Irish big wave surfing onto the world scene. It led to Al being invited to take part in many of the top big wave events across the globe and cemented his place in local surfing folklore. A dedicated and highly-articulate sportsman, Alastair Mennie continues his personal odyssey to find the perfect monster wave. Al is the author of ‘Surfing Mennie Waves’ chronicling his career to date and an inspirational orator who has given talks to amongst others, Nike.
David Healy MBE
Sir David, as he’s known to his adoring fans, is Northern Ireland’s leading goal-scorer, having found the net for his country on no fewer than 35 occasions. A living legend, David holds the UEFA record for the most goals scored in a European Championship qualifying campaign (13). Starting his professional career at Manchester United, he spent three years at Preston North End before transferring to Elland Road. Moves to Fulham and Sunderland followed and after loan spells with Ipswich Town and Doncaster Rovers, David secured his dream move to Glasgow Rangers. He was part of last season’s squad that secured the Scottish Premier League and CIS Cup double. Despite interest from other clubs, the Killyleagh man decided to accept the offer of a contract extension at Ibrox for the 2011/12 season. David is a patron of the Tiny Life and Factor 50 charities and has been the face of campaigns for Ikea, Decathlon, the Flagship Shopping Centre and Sport Relief.
Mickey Harte
Mickey Harte, successful Tyrone manager, businessman and author. He led the Red Hand county to three All-Ireland title wins and is one of the most decorated and admired managers in the history of Gaelic Games.
Starting his managerial career with his local club Errigal Ciaran, he subsequently guided Tyrone Minors to All-Ireland glory, before repeating the feat with the county’s Under-21’s. Also a highly-respected businessman, this former school tutor is an in-demand motivational speaker and brand ambassador. He is the author of two books, including the best-seller Harte (Presence Is The Only Thing). Mickey has also hired and fired budding entrepreneurs on RTE 1 Radio’s GAA Pitch programme and penned a weekly column in a top Northern Ireland daily newspaper.
